Physical Theatre Course in English

By Spindrift Theatre

Spring 2019

Nordic theatre company Spindrift Theatre is starting a weekly, international drama class in English in Helsinki from January 2019. The course is meant for anyone who is interested in acting and theatre and wants to investigate the world of performance without the pressure of speaking Finnish or being a native English speaker. We will focus on different techniques of physical theatre, ranging from Western European popular theatre traditions to Eastern European avant garde.

At Spindrift Theatre, we believe that the core of a performer is his/her body and voice, and that the magic of theatre starts with simple physical actions and connection with the space and the other performers. Rather than starting intellectually by analysing a text, for us theatre grows from physical training, improvisation and spatial relationships.

On the course you will get the chance to develop your performance skills, try out different theatre styles and get a taste of devising. If the group is willing to continue after the initial semester, there is a possibility to create a devised or scripted performance in autumn 2019.
