Spindrift Theatre is an all female award winning Nordic theatre company consisting of seven women from Finland, Norway and Iceland. We create from a curiosity about human behavior. We turn ideas and truthful experiences into compelling theatre through physical devising. We focus on specific perspectives and how they influence the human experience. We question socially normative behavior through stories devised from the bodies on stage, or in collaboration with visiting artists we admire.

Spindrift consists of artistic directors Anna Korolainen Crevier (Finland), Bergdís Júlía Jóhannsdóttir (Iceland), Sólveig Eva Magnúsdóttir (Iceland/USA) and Tinna Þorvalds Önnudóttir (Iceland), and members Henriette Kristensen (Norway), Marjo Elina Lahti (Finland) and Outi Ikonen (Finland). We came together during our theatre training in London (Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance) and Estonia (Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre). In 2021 we welcomed talented actresses and storytellers Outi Ikonen (Finland) and Marjo Elina Lahti (Finland).

We were connected through our similar interests in theatre and storytelling, and a desire to train and explore further the performer’s body and its expressive potential. We are particularly interested in creating a safe space for the uniqueness and multiplicity of each performer’s identity and how it manifests itself through their body, voice and artistic choices.

Since 2013 we have been working on our own craft in different countries and come together for residencies, training, festivals and performances. We work alongside each other as fellow actresses, directors, producers and teachers, according to each project’s needs.

We focus on visually intriguing, physicality-based performances, following the passion to move audiences through both honesty and dreamlike worlds. Our work stems from a curiosity towards human nature and social activism.

As we work internationally the name Spindrift refers to our connection across the sea. The image of the ocean wave meeting its surface winds reminds us of theatrical confrontation. The opposite forces within this same element remind us of the contradictory and diverse qualities of each individual. 

As a collective of female performers we organically work with feminist principles. We aim for a collaborative working process and try to diminish hierarchies within our different working groups, and aim to make power dynamics transparent.

In our training as well as creative processes, we believe in the strength of individuality within ensemble practice, and aim at supporting the different qualities of our performers and other creatives by fostering a safe space free from value judgement. We want the individual to flourish, following their own impulses, honesty and truth within their work, rather than dictating or moulding so they might fit a certain frame of function.

We are also working on a feminist training practice, where the whole range of movement and voice qualities is explored. The performer’s entire apparatus – including body, voice and individual experiences –  has theatrical potential and we seek to avoid overlooking "feminine" qualities in an art form where "masculine" tendencies are often encouraged.
